Remoteness
From the safety of a life where consequence rarely reaches beyond inconvenience, we, the comfortable have a habit of making remoteness an aesthetic, a symbol for freedom.
It isn’t until the familiar begins to fade that remoteness carries consequence.
And, consequence has a way of changing how lightly you move through the world. Not dramatically, but patiently. It asks for more: attention, humility.
Here there is less between me and the outcome of my decision. I sometimes wonder what becomes of humility when consequence becomes something we rarely have to carry ourselves?
There is a peculiar humility in realizing how little separates confidence from circumstance.
Perhaps that is why remoteness matters.
